Road trips are one of many passions. The others include: back roads, dive bars, cold brews, and a good burger! The combination of a back roads, road trip -- more times than not -- will deliver the others! Heading off, I'm always thinking when and where I can exit onto historic byways of California.
Today's destination, less than 25 miles from downtown Sacramento -- more or less. Fortunately, I know the way with my eyes closed. Well, that would be dangerous. But no GPS on board...EVER! No passports necessary to cross the Sacramento County line into neighboring Yolo County on this day trip.
Wait! Did I mention biker bar? You know, Harley's and such. The complete dive bar package at Plainfield Station on Country Road 98 in Woodland, California, circa 1934 proudly emblazoned. Bar, burgers, bikers, back roads, brews! Really? Could it get any better? Absolutely!
Locals pour in. Bartender Dee -- she's only been on the scene 2-1/2 years, but she's a star. Owner, Pete, 12 years pushing out the burgers and fries. Fresh-cut fries at that! No question about where's the beef when it comes to Plainfield hand-formed burgers;none of that pre-fab frozen stuff. Remember to tip the cook.
Crowds are friendly. Lone pool table if you're interested. And a large outdoor eating area with picnic tables. Live music in the warmer months. Did you hear me say, "Complete package?"
Come for the burgers but come back for Taco Tuesdays! Getting here is half the fun. Get creative and find the longest route via back roads from Interstate 80 or Interstate 5. Slow down and let your dive bar instincts guide the way.
