Sacramento California Everthing Old is New

Along the Waterfront In Old Sacramento by Barbara L. Steinberg©

Looking for something to wile away the hours on a quiet afternoon or evening? Or a romantic getaway to surprise Old Sacramento California Historic Tower Bridge Gateway to the City Credit Barbara Steinberg 2009 that someone special? Let me just say two words...Old Sacramento! Okay, I know you’re thinking, “That old place!” Until recently, I would have agreed. Then I was asked to write an insider’s exposé—put a new spin on an old topic.

Not unlike many Sacramento natives, I rarely look to this historic destination for my local entertainment. Sometimes, when guests need to kill a few hours we wander down to the waterfront. Otherwise, frankly, it’s off the radar. Some in-depth research was necessary to prime my creative juices. Hoping for the best, I headed off to immerse myself in the subject. Little did I know this would lead to many great discoveries and the knowledge that Old Sacramento defines the adage, “Everything old is new again.”

Follow along for more:

Hawaiian Chieftan at Sunset Old Sacramento Tower Bridge In the years preceding the California gold discovery, the settlement at Sutter’s Fort was forsaken and life began anew on the nearby Sacramento waterfront. The world rushed to New Helvetia--as it was once known--and the bustling community along the Sacramento River became the economic engine of the region, as it is today.  The Rest of the Story...

Old Sacramento isn’t just about grabbing a quick bite on the run. Although, for those on a tight schedule, there’s more than enough places to dine and dash. Personally, I never considered it a dining destination. What a mistake! My list of 1,000 places I must eat before I die just increased! The Rest of the Story...

Old Sacramento Brooks Novelty Neon Credit Barbara Steinberg The list of things to see and do really took me by surprise. Of course, I was well-aware that Old Sacramento is part of a 28-acre California State Historic Park, a California Historical Landmark, and National Historic Landmark; so this tells you it’s something pretty special. The Rest of the Story....

Delta King Courtesy of Delta KingLess is more when it comes to lodging in Old Sacramento; in this case, the two alternatives offer incredible diversity. The historic Delta King and the contemporary Embassy Suites both deliver stellar river views and memorable dining possibilities. The Rest of the Story....

3 Rs of Nick's Cove: Recreation, Relaxation, Romance(ation)!

Are you that woman?Quilted comfort and early morning sunlight filterd upon your berth. Nick's Cove has defined romantic escape, raised the bar, and exceeded all expecations. by Barbara L. Steinberg

Marin County back roads to Nick's Cove Credit Barbara L Steinberg 2012The romance begins by leaving urban shackles behind. There are country byways to inspire and lift your spirits as if the journey's end weren't reason enough. Stupifying scenic roads are the only access to Nick's Cove. Pick one -- Lucas Valley, Shoreline Highway, Point Reyes-Petaluma Road -- don't rush this odyssey. The stimulus of lush landscapes, rolling hills, valleys, craggy canyons and (eventually) bay and ocean wiews is visual foreplay. Tiny hamlets along the way offer comfort and Marin County specialties. Be one with the locals. If it's true what they say about oysters, be certain to shuck a dozen at Hog Island Oysters.

And finally, when you think it can't be any better...Nick's Cove...the gold at the imagined rainbow's end.

Romantic...OMG! Twelve luscious cottages tucked away in Nicks Cove Fly Fishermens Cottage Credit Barbara L Steinberg 2012Marin County overlooking Tomales Bay. Through sunshine and fog, natural beauty abounds. Breathtaking views. The first encounter will leave you giddy. No detail has been ignored. Plush beds. Comfortable sitting areas, music, mini-fridge with drinks, and the most fantastic bathrooms. Delicious food, much of it local! Breakfast is delivered to your cottage -- juice, fresh fruit, homemade pastries, and coffee are included or for an additional charge -- buttermilk waffles, crab Benedict, steel cut oatmeal, bacon -- you decide. Barbecued oysters are delivered upon arrival!

Dine at Nick's Cove Restaurant where menus change frequently and are a locavore's Nick's Cove Gourmet S'mores Firieside Credit FrankeyImages.comdream. Chocolate is an aphrodisiac! So they say. Savor gourmet s'mores fused fireside. Sensous and finger licking good!

Back in your cottage, a cozy fire and sunset views await. Wink, wink!

The Point Reyes National Seashore and Tomales Bay State Park provide more reasons to escape and romance Marin County's aboundant natural and agricultural landscapes. As if the enchantment of Nick's Cove could leave you wanting, there are other nearby distractions. Kayak, hike, explore or just enjoy the quiet serenity of this one-of-a-kind destination. Made for lovers, Heart's Desire Beach in Tomales Bay State Park is a favorite with kayakers. Scheduled kayaking tours are available.

Ask about seasonal and mid-week rates and AAA and AARP discounts. The staff is there to serve! Romantics will love that Nick's Cove is incredibly pet friendly.

Yosemite's GreenPath is Getting Greener

Environmentally Friendly Lodging & Habitat Open in Yosemite Valley

Yosemite Habitat DNC Parks & Resorts at Yosemite, Inc.  Visitors to Yosemite National Park should get ready to experience the best side of green with the debut of the Park's totally earth-friendly Habitat store and some very green lodging options.

With products ranging from tee shirts made from recycled plastic bottles and children's games made of soy, to organic snacks and solar powered water bottles that double as flashlights, the new Habitat store offers a range of affordable gifts, clothing and outdoor gear in a completely eco-friendly retail environment.

Operated by Delaware North Companies Parks & Resorts at Yosemite, Inc., Habitat exemplifies the company's award-winning GreenPath® environmental stewardship program. Its 1,000-square-foot interior is a floor-to-ceiling exhibit of green interior design and retailing. Habitat's display fixtures are made from recycled items that have been used within Delaware North Companies Parks & Resort at Yosemite's operations.

Yosemite Habitat Store DNC Parks & Resorts at Yosemite, Inc. Throughout Habitat shoppers will find educational signage focusing on Yosemite's environmental stewardship projects, and impressive statistics about waste diversion, energy savings and water usage. A selection of phrases can be found throughout the store, such as "Yosemite recycled 28 tons of plastic in 2009. If you laid the bottles end-to-end they would equal 111 miles or the distance of over seven round trips from Yosemite Valley to Half Dome."

Habitat is currently open Thursday through Sunday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Beginning May 26, 2010, Habitat will be open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. The store is located at 9015 Village Drive, Yosemite National Park, CA 95389. For additional information, please call the store at 209-372-8453.

If this isn't enough green for you, the Yosemite Lodge at the Falls just unveiled two prototype guest rooms on the cutting edge of environmentally-friendly interior architecture and design. The two rooms at The Lodge are the first of their kind in Yosemite National Park.

The eco-friendly guest rooms were designed with an eye toward an eventual roll-out throughout the Lodge's 245 rooms. The prototypes offer an opportunity for Delaware North Companies and the National Park Service to evaluate the success of the overall design and gather guest feedback from those who stay in the rooms. An additional goal is the eventual certification of Yosemite Lodge at the Falls as a LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) and Energy Star property.

Yosemite Green Room Lodge DNC Parks & Resorts at Yosemite, Inc. The "green" rooms are elegant...warm and welcoming. Here's a little something about all that's environmentally-kind on the inside:

Room Entry

A new electronic key card entry system integrates with the room's energy controls, using a lock that requires 50% fewer batteries than older locks, with the batteries lasting for nearly four years. After unlocking the room, the guest places the key card in a wall slot just inside the door. With a faint click, the key card activates select circuits that power lighting and electronics. When the guest removes the key from the slot upon leaving, the room reverts to its unoccupied, energy-saver state, automatically reducing the demand for power to circuits that feed the television and accessory lights.

Bedding & Linens

The American-made, 100% organic cotton sheets were produced in a solar-powered factory in Rhode Island. The bed's blanket cover, throw and window drapery are made from washable cotton matelasse.

Lighting

Handsome new steel wall sconces, pendants and floor lamps in the guest rooms  use energy-saving compact fluorescent bulbs, which use one-third the energy and last roughly ten times longer than standard incandescent bulbs.

Flooring

With fibers produced in part from recycled plastic bottles and a backing derived from old tires, the carpet tiles in the guest rooms add warmth and comfort underfoot with a small carbon footprint.

Yosemite Lodge_GreenRoom_Bath DNC Parks & Resorts at Yosemite, Inc Vanity & Countertop

Produced just outside San Francisco, the countertop is made of 85% glass collected from curbside recycling bins. This striking surface alerts guests that there's something different and special about their room, especially when paired with drinking glasses made from wine bottles.

Furnishings

Richard Kollath designed a line of Old Hickory furnishings unique to the green rooms at Yosemite Lodge at the Falls featuring distinctive, inset bow tie joinery. Like other Old Hickory furnishings and accessories in the Yosemite Valley, this rustic, durable collection is made using mid-western hickory saplings - the hardest wood in North America (30% harder than oak) and a renewable source that continually re-sprouts from the same stump.

Recycle Caddies

Kollath McCann's prototype divided recycling caddies were also made by Old Hickory.

Water

The new shower and bath fixtures in the Yosemite Lodge prototype rooms are high-performing, water-efficient models that will save nearly 5,000 gallons of water each year, using just 1.28 gallons per flush.

Paint

The rooms are painted using California-based Kelly-Moore paints with low- and zero-VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds).

Sacramento California Celebrates Its Newest Citizen

At Long Last, the Grand Opening of Citizen Hotel Photos & Story  by Barbara L. Steinberg©

Sacramento Citizen Hotel The New Sign of things to come Credit Barbara Steinberg 2009 Sacramento's historic 1925 Cal-Western Life building has a new life and a new glow as the Citizen Hotel, the latest in the Joie de Vivre Hotels hoteldom. Known locally as the J Building (located at 926 J Street), the Beaux Arts Citizen was painstakingly restored, remade, and reinvented as Downtown Sacramento California's first and long-awaited luxury, boutique hotel. After much anticipation and a few weeks of a soft opening, the Citizen Hotel made its debut...a debutante ball as such...on February 26. A regular red carpet event...the spotlights lit up a the sky and even Marilyn and Groucho look-alikes were there to greet the throng of A-list guests.

From the locally-fresh and contempoary Grange...Citizen's ever-so glamorous restaurant...to the 12th-floor penthouse and all Sacramento Citizen JDV Hotel Grand Opening 7th Floor Rooftop Crediit Barbara Steinberg 2009 spaces in between, the Citizen was buzzing with excitement. Enormous flower displays and pink-hued crystals adorned tables of jumbo shrimp, cracked crab, oysters on the half shell, crab salad, and ceviche -- a temple of seafood delights. Wine fountains flowed and music filled the air. The balcony of Mezzanine lounge Scandal was jazzed and jumping. The 7th-floor tented rooftop terrace delivered more musical vibes and capital views...literally...the Capitol a jewel in the night sky.

It was exhilarating to say the least. JDV and their partners have done Sacramento proud. If you haven't been. Go! Stay! Eat! Enjoy!

And photos tell the story. Click to enlarge.

In San Francisco California JDV Hotels is Hospitality

Just Another San Francisco California Getaway by Barbara L. Steinberg©

I embrace every opportunity to travel my adopted California home. And I know no better way to travel California then in stress-free comfort aboard Amtrak. So I was thrilled when a San Francisco meeting San Francisco Emeryville California Amtrak Station Credit Barbara Steinbergprovided the occasion to get aboard the Capitol Corridor from Sacramento to that beautiful city by the bay. The train rumbles into Emeryville where a San Francisco California Amtrak View Embarcadero Bay Bridge Credit Barbara Steinberg connector bus whisks you across the Bay Bridge into downtown San Francisco.

So the transportation’s figured out. Now where to stay? With so many lodging possibilities, it’s always handy that my years of California livelihood have brought me many good friends in the hospitality world. Among those friends, I am pleased to count California-based Joie de Vivre (JDV) Hotels. On this particular jaunt I needed someplace close to Amtrak’s San Francisco drop-off points and my meeting location. JDV has a number of San Francisco hotels and I was pleased to land at the Galleria Park Hotel on Sutter Street – a perfectly-situated 10- to 15-minute walk from everywhere I needed or wanted to be.

Ferry Marketplace Farmers Market Credit Barbara Steinberg 2009 Though I could have jumped off the Amtrak connector bus closer to my San Francisco hotel, I opted for the Ferry Building. Why? Well, the Ferry Plaza Farmer’s Market was in full swing on another sunny California Tuesday and a positively brilliant San Francisco day. I couldn’t miss this chance to peruse local produce vendors and cafés…inside and out! The San Francisco Ferry Building is a year-round representation of all culinary delights from California and around the world. For me…Mecca! After making the rounds, doing my fair share of sampling, and a fabulous lunch (another story), I made my way up Market Street past the daily S.F. Artist Market at Justin Herman Plaza. Past wonderful store fronts. Interesting public art. Shoeshine stands. The homeless. It’s all part of the urban experience.

Galleria Park Hotel Lobby Credit Barbara Steinberg 2009 Galleria Park Hotel Guest Room Courtesy of GPHThe walk is over too fast and there I am in the lobby of the Galleria Park Hotel. Built in 1911, the restored hotel is a mix of Art Deco/Art Nouveau meets mid-Century modern and 21st-century trendy. A friendly staff checks me in and I ascend to Room 415. The décor has shades of purple and green, which I enjoy against the contrast of the historic architecture. Neatly dressed in white Frette linens, the king-sized bed looks welcoming but I have work to do and a meeting to attend.

So, the long story made short:  It was an easy walk to my meetings. After a long day, I gladly collapsed into the crisp white sheets and cozy pillows. Morning comes and it’s another storybook San Francisco day. I descend to the mezzanine for caffeine.  Somewhere around the second floor, a cacophony of voices rises to meet me. There in the lobby is a gathering of hip 20- and 30-somethings (maybe a few older) laughing, chatting, air kissing, and generally having a grand time. Visiting employees of Sephora, they are GPH/JDV regulars…or so I am told. They are having way too much fun. And, now as I recall, this is the same fun-loving group I encountered in the lobby the night before.

GPS - Galleria Park SuggestsBTW…I can’t forget to mention the third-floor Rooftop Park which I almost San Francisco California JDV Hospitality Galleria Park Hotel Rooftop Park Credit Barbara Steinberg missed entirely! It pays to read your key portfolio. Take a moment to enjoy its meditative appeal. Plus, the complimentary wine hour 5:30 to 6:30pm daily. And the morning mezzanine caffeine is fresh-brewed and F-R-E-E! There are plenty of local coffee places nearby if you prefer. Another great GPH/JDV service is the great information about things to do. GPH's own GPS or Galleria Park Suggests: A Guide to Chinatown features “What the Locals Know: Chinatown” and "Architectural Walking Tours." Next time I hope to investivage some of these local suggestions. I just so appreciate all the extra attention to detail. It makes traveling so much easier. Especially if you’re a SF first-timer.

The latest California adventure is over too soon. The rocking and rolling Amtrak train is providing incredible sunset and bay views; still a few moments left to reflect. Despite all the fabulous food consumed during my San Francisco escapade, I am suddenly hungry. Something about riding the train, I think. Then I remember the one perfect Pink Lady apple purchased at the Ferry Plaza squirreled away in my bag. What a treat!

What a trip!

A few last California Travel Insider pointers: GPH has great weekday rates, but weekends are even better. It’s located close to great shopping (Union Square, Maiden Lane, Ferry Building, and the Crocker Galleria. No lack of places to dine, of course. But look for the opening of Midi in the hotel lobby. You’re blocks away from SFMOMA, Moscone Center, Carnelian Room, and…well, I’ll leave the rest for you to discover. Oh, yes, they are pet friendly too!

California Staycations! Please, I Invented It. by Barbara L. Steinberg©

No One Ever Believes Me! by Barbara L. Steinberg©

Really, I'm not kidding. Ask anyone who knows me. But I didn't need some new-fangled word to describe a close-to-home getaway. I would simply say, "Get...a...way!" It doesn't have to be far for you to relax, repose, rejuvenate. Trust me.

Fireworks in Old Sacramento Waterfront Credit Barbara SteinbergI don't know who coined the word "staycation" but it's the word of the day. And I for one refuse to use it. But it suddenly occurred to me that, yes, in fact I invented the concept -- or at least had been talking about it openly for years. Janet Fullwood, Travel Editor, Sacramento Bee, recently wrote a great article about getaways (oops, staycations) which might include heading to a local B&B. In fact, years ago I took my husband on an overnight escape to that very B&B -- less than two miles from our home. We walked to dinner, enjoyed a fireworks display in Old Sacramento, and strolled "home" to our B&B retreat. The next day we enjoyed a lovely breakfast, explored the park across the street (one I had never visited) and then departed for our own Midtown abode.

It was just one night. However, it was wonderfully refreshing and really felt like an adventure. Friends thought it a bit odd...why would you pay all that money to spend the night in (basically) your own neighborhood? Of course, now that some clever person has invented hip and PC "staycations" no one would think twice or even ask. And our close-to-home retreat was nothing new; we frequently enjoy this kind of vacation. There are so many great places and sometimes just passing by doesn't quite cut it.

And my getaways were always called "fuel-friendly" -- long before gas prices crested the $2.00 mark. Here are some examples of great getaways:

Sacramento, California: Getaways Don't Have To Be Far

California Delta: Shhh! Isleton is Sleeping

Breakfast Divine Monterey Bay California

Monterey_bay_inn_breakfast_credit_bAs if Monterey Bay weren't enough. Coupled with stunning bay views from my suite windows. Oh, no, they just had to add the bonus of breakfast in bed...or in a comfy chair....or on the balcony...OMG...how do you decide?

When staying along Cannery Row and Monterey Bay, the choice is easy: choose the Monterey Bay Inn or Spindrift Inn. The views are unparalleled and there's the added "little thing" of continental breakfasts served right to your door! How precious.

Each day, a new in-room dining form is left on your bed. All you need do is check the food choices -- presented on a beautiful tray with fine china and linens choices include breakfast pastry, hard-boiled eggs, fresh baked breads, muffins and bagels, seasonal fruit, choice of fresh squeezed juices, cereals, and coffee or tea-- the time you want it delivered (very reasonable 7am - 10am) and hang the order outside your door before midnight.

The next morning, a gentle tap on your door brings your breakfast to you. No fuss. No muss. The joy of fresh coffee and all that view. Oh, yes, the daily USA Today, too! I must be dreaming.

BTW - the two inns have had this idea all along that "it's the little things" that count.

Barbara L. Steinberg

Contact me if you'd like to hear the "Rest of the Story" about my recent visit to Monterey Bay. Friends, families, lovers...nothing can compare.
